Why you’re bringing this issue to me, I don’t know, but alright, I’ll address it.
To “Want every American to go to college” does not mean that college should be a mandatory requirement of citizenship. He means that he wants everyone to have the chance to go to college. He doesn’t want anyone to not be able to not go if they want to.
If you honestly believe this isn’t for the best because giving the poorer families opportunity to a better education is bad because it would let riff-raff in and ruin the quality of school, that is not a “Taken out of context” issue, that is a your opinion issue.
Not to mention there are lots of reasons why someone might not have good grades, including but not limited to:
- poorly funded schools / not having access to quality education
- being an at-risk youth (e.g. neglect or abuse in the home, severe poverty, etc.)
- having a job while being in school, making it difficult to study / get homework done / etc.
- self-fulfilling prophecy that can occur when someone is labeled a “bad student” from a young age
- chronic illness that can make a student miss school for long periods of time
- having a learning disability
- having learning styles that the vast majority of schools don’t cater to
Plus, grades are just generally a very poor way to measure a person’s potential.
“If you don’t have the grades to get in, it’s pretty clear you don’t deserve it.”
Wow, fuck you.
I don’t have anything amazingly intelligent to add, but yeah, you have no idea what people go through in high school. Oh, I have things to add to the list of things that can affect your grades:
- long term pregnancy(/ies) and/or childbirth
- teachers with racial prejudice
And this person seems to imply that your grades are the only thing that determine whether you can get into college. Obviously, no, that’s not correct. Income inequality is a very large factor, and you know what Rick Santorum apologist?:
“There is income inequality in America. There always has been. Hopefully, and I do say that, there always will be.” -Rick Santorum
hi
i have a learning disability that was largely unmedicated and a good deal of headproblems to top it off
i barely graduated high school
it took me six years to get medicated and get my head in decent shape enough to go to college after a first failed attempt
now i have a 4.0 and i’m doing honors classes next semester
want to tell me i don’t deserve it
